International Intellectual Property Alliance targets governments mandating Open Source usage

with 2 comments

A quote from the International Intellectual Property Alliance web site:

In the IIPA’s 2010 Special 301 submission, the copyright industries urge greater global protection of American jobs and exports threatened by piracy.

What is interesting is that one of the criteria the IIPA has used to identify countries that pose a threat to US jobs and exports is a mandate by the government to use open source software. For example they recommend that Brazil

in order to improve the adequate and effective protection of copyrighted materials …

Avoid legislation on the mandatory use of open source software by government agencies and government controlled
companies.

The  IIPA is made up of the Association of American Publishers (AAP), the Business Software Alliance (BSA), the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Between them they represent over 1900 US companies.

Interesting…
